Leaks at the Floor, Walls and Corners

Seepage favors the seam where wall meets slab, window wells that fill in a storm, worn mortar in brick or block, and cracks in poured walls, often puddling feet from the entry point.

On Aug 1, 2026, more rain fell at the Indianapolis airport than in the whole of July (National Weather Service). In Garfield Park, that downpour overwhelmed a sewer line, and a finished basement took on about 16 inches of water (Mirror Indy). Months earlier, on April 27, a short, heavy rain had pushed stormwater up through basement drains on one Broad Ripple block (FOX59). Citizens Energy said the combined sewer may have surcharged and advised owners on older combined connections to add backflow prevention.

Typical Reasons to Request Basement Leak Repair

  • A wet line where wall meets floor. Often handled with a section of interior drain feeding a sump, discharging outdoors.
  • One crack that weeps after rain. Usually injected from inside.
  • Soft or missing mortar. Repointing brick or block joints that have worn open.
  • Water landing at the wall. Downspouts carried at least three feet out and soil sloped away.

How Pricing Usually Works

Waterproof paint or sealant, per sq ft$1 to $8Fixr national (2026)

These national ranges stand in because no Indiana source exists; none is a price from this site. Backwater valves and sewer-line repairs are priced by a licensed plumbing contractor. The cost guide has more.

How a Contractor Approaches It

  1. Following the water. From the wet spot back to its entry, outside too.
  2. Ruling out the sewer. A floor drain that overflows is a plumbing matter.
  3. The repair in writing. Location, method, materials, price and warranty terms, signed by the contractor before you sign.

What You Get by Asking Here

Background on leaks, and contact from one independent local contractor if you choose. This free referral and advertising service is not a contractor or plumber, and it never visits, prices a repair or presents a contract. Contractors may pay it a flat advertising fee (a trial runs free for now), while you never pay it or get anything from it. Check the contractor yourself: ask what local license or registration covers your address.

Sewer Backup or Groundwater?

Water through a wall or floor edge is seepage, a waterproofing job. Water rising from a floor drain is a backup, which waterproofing won't stop. Citizens Energy, the city's wastewater utility since 2011, notes that Marion County's combined system can overflow with a quarter inch of rain. Its 28 miles of DigIndy tunnels, finished in 2025, cut river overflows but don't stop basement backups.

For an Indianapolis address, report a backup to Citizens Energy at (317) 924-3311. If the public sewer isn't blocked, Citizens treats it as a private-side problem for a licensed plumber, with cleanup left to the resident. In Carmel, Noblesville, Beech Grove, Greenwood or Speedway, contact that place's own sewer utility.

Most homeowner policies leave out backups unless you add an endorsement, which Citizens says typically costs $40 to $160 a year. Read your policy and ask your insurer or agent. If you believe a public sewer caused a backup, Citizens runs its own damage-claim process, described on its website. This site plays no part in insurance.

Questions Homeowners Ask

Is a damp wall the same thing as a leak?

Not always. Summer humidity can condense on a cool wall and pass for seepage. Tape plastic over the spot for a day or two: moisture behind the sheet came through the masonry, while beads on the room side mean condensation.

Why does water show up only after big storms?

Heavy rain soaks the ground, and clay-rich till can drain slowly, holding water against the wall after the sky clears until it finds the weakest seam. Note how soon after rain the water appears, since the timing helps separate runoff from groundwater.

Will a backwater valve stop seepage?

No. The valve sits on the sewer line and closes when flow reverses, so it answers backups, not groundwater. Citizens recommends one for homes with basement fixtures, evaluated by a licensed plumber; a permit and inspection may be required through (317) 327-8700. A valve put in wrong contributed to one 2026 flood near 54th Street and Boulevard Place (Mirror Indy), so have a licensed plumber install and inspect it.

Who looks after the sewer line from my house?

It is generally the owner's to maintain, though Citizens Energy decides what falls inside its easement; lateral permit questions go to Citizens at 317-927-4444. Repairing it is work for a licensed plumbing contractor or, outside the house, a qualified sewer contractor.
